Food breaks down into sugar (glucose) in your stomach. This sugar goes into your blood.
The pancreas is an organ that makes insulin. Insulin is like a key that unlocks sugar so your cells can use it for energy!
Insulin attaches to cells and helps sugar get inside. Without insulin, sugar stays stuck in the blood and can't feed your muscles and brain.
In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas doesn't make insulin. People with Type 1 need to get insulin from shots or a pump to help unlock the sugar.
Foods have different amounts of sugar (carbs). More sugar means the pancreas has to work harder to make enough insulin!
